The following is a message from the NCSBN regarding the changes in the NCLEX-RN exam format and testing
Starting on October 1, 2020
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, NCSBN introduced several carefully evaluated and tested modifications to the NCLEX examinations. These modifications expired on Sept. 30, 2020. Beginning Oct. 1, 2020, both NCLEX-RN and NCLEX-PN exams will retain some of the characteristics of the modified exam. The difficulty levels and passing standards of the exams have not changed.
The modifications effective Oct. 1, include:
-
Pretest items have been reintroduced. Each candidate will get 15 pretest items in their exam.
-
Due to the addition of the 15 pretest items, the minimum length exam is 75 items and the maximum length exam is 145 items.
-
Maximum examination time is five hours.
-
The voluntary Next Generation NCLEX Special Research Section has been reintroduced.
-
The NCLEX Tutorial has been replaced with a general guide and test taking tips.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION UPDATE REGARDING THE NCLEX-RN EXAM CHANGES
Version 8 (updated 05/15/2020)
Important Notice: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and measures imposed by the federal, state and local governments, candidate testing has been interrupted. NCSBN has worked with Pearson VUE to reopen some test centers and allow for testing in critical healthcare fields to continue to support the high demand due to COVID-19. Some changes will be made to our testing program to enable testing to resume. Key changes are addressed in the FAQs. To the extent that information elsewhere on the NCSBN website may differ or be in conflict with the FAQs, the COVID-19 Impact to NCLEX Candidates FAQs shall control. We are working as quickly as possible to update the NCSBN website and other materials. In the meantime, any questions may be directed to nclexinfo@ncsbn.org.
There will be no test items specific to the Covid 19 virus in the current NCLEX-RN testing.
